Ivete Sangalo Biography

Ivete was destined to become a musician, not only is she from the musical area of Brazil, Bahia (where artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil come from) but her family were very musical. In her teens she was a model but decided to pursue her passion of music.

At 15, ruffling feathers at Juvenile Court, she already sang in bars and night clubs in Salvador. At a show in Bar Canoa at the Hotel Meridien, she met Jonga, director of Bloco Eva and percussionist for Companhia Click.

"He was forming a new group called Banda Eva and invited me to be the vocalist", she remembers. "Even though I had already won the Troféu Caymmi (the principal prize of Bahian music) as a promising newcomer, I was scared at the invitation because until then I was just a reveler of Carnaval, having never been on a Trio Elétrico, not even as a fan."

In 1993 she started her career as a vocalist for the group Banda Eva. After several rehearsals, some she was finally ready for her debut at the Carnaval. Now she works side by side with her husband, Alexandre Santos Lins, who is a member of the band.

Banda Eva released six albums and sold more than 4 million copies. In 1992 she won the Dorival Caymmi Award as best performer.

Ivete then went solo in 1999 and has released 4 albums all of them amazingly successful. For her 10th anniversary she performed at a concert recorded by MTC along with special guests, Daniela Mercury & Gilberto Gil. This was attended by over 80,000 people. The recording of this DVD became the best selling DVD in Brazil ever! Selling over ½ million units.
